So, I finally managed to root my one m8. I have now full R/W access to my extSD.

ES File Explorer definitely gets my vote.

Total Commander is hands down the best, very configurable with plugins. Works the best for me across multiple platforms

Solid Explorer here, though I also like the open source Amaze file manager and have it installed as well. Solid gets the nod on my tablet for the Material Design update and dual pane capability. I used ES File Explorer for a while, but they got bought, and ad and spyware infested. Solid was the best alternative. I bought the payware version of the old release, and the license keys works with the Material design update.

MiXplorer is a free (completely, no ads, no feature restrictions) File manager which also doubles up as Cloud Storage Manager. It is better than many other premium File Managers I have ever used. eventhough i paid for Solid Explorer (it's cheap), for some reasons i kept using X-plore.

Xplore is de facto standard since Symbian days.
