Overview: A useful introduction to the political history of Egypt up to the late 1980s (the most recent edition of this book dates from 1991). Two items were surprising. First, even though this is the third edition of the book, it maintains that the January 1977 bread riots in Egypt were caused by the World Bank's "dislike of subsidization." And it goes on to say that the subsidies were canceled "to satisfy the Bank." In fact, it was the IMF that objected and, indeed, several publications (for example, Sadowski's book "Political Vegetables") refer to the memorandum sent to the government by the IMF's representative in Cairo that conveyed the Fund's conditions
