Here are the final wagered days and times - 51 entries in all, the guesses span the 35 days between April 13th and May 17th.





I'll update with any new developments that come my way about the state of the ice, polar bear sightings or any juicy news that shows up on the cork board in the Nenana Post Office or on the bathroom wall at Moocher's Bar.

The thread will also remain open for posts of new and creative ways to pass the intervening hours as we join the good denizens of Nenana in waiting for the glorious, slushy finale.

2024 Mobi Ice Classic Poster Contest
aka "Can You Draw Better than 5th Grader?"

While we embark upon skating and other wholesome pastimes during our "Tripod Days Ice Capades" it's time again for the creatives in our midst to come up with a poster commemorating our 2024 Ice Classic. So I'm offering a 100 WRZ$ award for the best Mobi Ice Classic submitted over the next nine days.

Contest Rules

1. Each must be an original design.

2. Entry must have a "Tripod" shape incorporated into the design.

3. Entry must say "A Mobi Tradition Since 2022".

4. Entry must say "2024 Mobi Ice Classic" somewhere on the poster

5. Posters must max out at 800x800 pixels

Beyond that, go nuts. Last year's winner was Lush's entry,
Deranged, Pyromaniac Ice Gnome holding Satellite Guided Flame Thrower with Frolicking Fire Dragons,
which featured a deranged, pyromaniac ice gnome holding a satellite guided flame thrower and frolicking fire dragons. But you do you. Lets say we close out submissions on April 25th at 6:00pm Alaska Standard Time [UTC -9:00] and up to three entries per person will be considered. Comments, kibitzing and critiquing are all highly encouraged!

The Tanana and Nenana rivers both still have quite a bit of ice to melt through. There are some areas along the upper Nenana and lower Tanana where the anchor ice is beginning to break. On the upper Nenana and upper Tanana rivers there are small channels of water beginning to open up. When the ice measurement was taken on April 12th, it was reported that the ice was not solid throughout the measurement. After 12-14 inches down, the ice is soft the remaining way through.

So what does that bode? I'll be sidling around town today, popping in Coghill's and stopping in the library and visiting the volunteers at the fire department to get the word on the state of the big freeze.
