Comics Authors receive 150,000 euros.
Twenty Flemish Authors will receive some 7,500 euros each in 2011 as a supplementary grant for their work. That was announced by the Flemish Literature Fund (VLF). The VLF allows these rewards because of the high quality of the comics works and the tendency that more and more Flemish albums get an English translation.
Amongst these authors are new talents like Floris De Smedt, but also experienced artists such as Marc Legendre (Biebel of Waterland and strips) and Steven Dupré (known from the Sara and Robin series).

Death to all Belgians. That's how the most remarkable book by the American artist Danny Wind (28) is called. Subtitle: A children's guide to a genocide. He compares the Belgians to vampires who "want to eat your brains" and then your cute puppies. "They want to take over America and murder your mum and dad. You'll have to learn Belgian language at school three times a day and eat waffles. Sounds good, you may think, but believe me, you'll soon have your stomach filled that you'll get sick of it.... "

Spider-Man dies!

Image

Even superheroes ever come to their end. Just ask Spider-Man. The intrepid comic hero actually dies in a recently published comic book in America. Much to the consternation of the fans.

The Death of Spider-Man, that's the youngest (and last) release in a series on the comic superhero in his lycra suit that can climb any wall. It digs the worst Spider-Man against his great opponent the Green Goblin. Peter Parker (Spider-Man, the boy that is) dies in the arms of his girlfriend Mary-Jane.

"I'm not lying when I say how embarrassing it is, that the tears rolled down my face during three quarters of an hour, "said Brian Michael Bendis, without any sense of drama, about the time he drew Spider-Man dying.

The story is episode 160 in the series 'Ultimate Spider-Man'. But the head of the division of Marvel Comics comic fans do not say too much having to mourn their hero in that red blue suit. He promises new stories and "a new Spider-Man. "Peter's death is not the end. It is the beginning of one of the most ambitious stories ever written in comic strips. "

TinTin travels back to America

Image

TinTin travels back to America next year, the comic hero gets his own café in New York. Negotiations with Moulinsart, who owns the rights of the heirs Hergé, are not over yet, but Yves Jadot (44) does not expect any problems.

"The Café Tintin is set next to a store with stuff about the comic hero," said the exiled Brussels resident in Manhattan, who manages four Belgian restaurants. "It is not a beer bar, alcohol is inconsistent with the values of Hergé's characters."

This fall runs the premiere from Steven Spielberg's film adaptation of 'The Secret of the Unicorn'. That will undoubtedly increase the international focus on the star reporter TinTin.

Nice, Zach. Thanks for keeping an eye on your local newspapers about comics news. Very interesting. Please keep them coming. Btw, I can't believe there isn't any comics news in other countries of the world... Maybe we should offer you a subscription for foreign newspapers, so you could check them also... ;)

Anyway, nothing to do with comics, but something funny I read in our local newspaper:

Image

J.K. Rowling, author of the immensely popular Harry Potter books, presented her new project 'Pottermore' on Thursday. Something to do with online background stories about the magician student. Nothing special except there was written in the same article that 'from October on, the seven Harry Potter stories will be published for the first time as ebook...' !?

LZF would have said: 'wtf! Never heard of mobilism???'

Two Tintin albums stolen in two weeks time.

    Image Image

On Saturday, May 14, the comic strip "Tintin au Congo 'was stolen from the Royal museum of Mariemont (Belgium). And during an exclusive sales of Tintin related objects on Friday, May 20, in Namur - also in Belgium - the comic" Le Crabe aux pinces d'or " was stolen.

"Tintin au Congo" is a comics that was published in black and white between 1935 and 1945. The thief came into the museum, waited until he was alone, broke open the display case and took the work of Hergé. He hid the comics under his clothes and walked out with it.

Barely one week later the man did it again. He was present at a sale of Tintin items in Namur and stole the comic "Le Crabe aux pinces d'or" from an open display case. He hid the work, which has a value of about 7000-9000 euro, just like last time under his clothing.

When the thief left the complex, a woman was entering the hall. She looked at the same display case and then left the room. She got into a blue Ford Courier pickup car. The thief of comics was sitting beside her.

The man is around 50 years and 1m75 long. He is thin, has graying hair and wears glasses. The woman is between 45 and 50 years. She is 1m70 tall and also thin. She has short brown hair.

Both comics have also been released on this site, here: The Adventures of Tintin collection. (09- Tintin and the Crabs with the Golden Claws and 02- Tintin in congo)

Note:
  1. There is no relation between the comics being stolen and released here (we think ;) )

  2. There is a video recording of the theft released by the police. Here it is: Image
