Personally, I use MX Player Pro (MX Player free version) when listening to music and audiobooks (mp3/m4a/m4b). It's primarily a video player but you can use it also as a media player.
Another free video/media player that can play mp3/m4a/m4b is VLC for Android.

In my opinion, nothing compares to "Smart Audiobook Player". I paid a small one-time fee (like 2 bucks IIRC) for Premium, but the free version should cover everything you need.
