Division Zero Box Set (1-3) by Matthew S. Cox
Requirements: ePUB Reader, 1.8MB
Overview: In 2418, the population is aware of psionics, people with the ability to affect the world around them with their minds. As humanity so often fears what it does not understand, many with gifts find themselves shunned or vilified for no reason other than ignorance. While some nations seek to exterminate anyone with mental powers, the United Coalition Front embraces them.

In order to protect society from potential crime the militarized police are ill-equipped to handle, the government has created Division 0―a special branch of law enforcement composed of psionic individuals trusted to deal with their own kind.

Born with the power of Astral Sense, Kirsten has the ability to interact with spirits and see into the world that waits beyond death. Her talent came at the meager cost of her childhood. Tortured by a devout mother who regarded her as The Devil’s work, Kirsten was faced with a horrible choice: run away from home at the age of ten, or die by her own mother’s hand. She hid from the world of the living, afraid and alone―until Division 0 took her in.

Resilient, if not bitter, twenty-two year old Agent Wren now belongs to the Investigative Operations arm of Division 0. Isolated in a city of millions, she works cases involving entities or events no one else can explain, and many (even other psionics) do not even believe.

#1 - Division Zero
Most cops get to deal with living criminals, but Agent Kirsten Wren isn’t most cops.

A gifted psionic with a troubled past, she possesses a rare combination of abilities that makes her a powerful weapon against paranormal threats. Adrift in a society that fears people like her, she feels alone in a city of millions.

In 2418, rampant violence and corporate warfare have left no shortage of angry wraiths. Most are little more than fleeting shadows or eerie whispers in the darkness, but every so often, one gathers enough strength to threaten the living.

A series of attacks by androids known as dolls leave the normal police baffled. Unable to explain what made the machines malfunction, they punt the case to Division 0. Kirsten’s investigation into who – or what – is behind the random murders soon makes her a target for corporate assassins.

Despite her past, and the cynical city around her, she clings to the belief that no one is beyond redemption. Alas, the killer is desperate to claim as many innocent souls as possible, and one might just be hers.

#2 - Lex De Mortuis
Some soldiers don’t let anything sway them from their mission—not even death from high explosives.

Free from her troubled past, Agent Kirsten Wren finds peace in mentoring Evan, a little boy with psionic talents similar to hers, and soon develops strong protective feelings for him.

A team of corporate “issue resolution consultants” tears up the city, continuing their mission to kill a man in the afterlife. Kirsten pursues the unusually potent spirits, trying to stop their rampage before more people die. Her investigation leads her to a strange ritual circle that gives off energy darker than any wraith she has yet encountered.

Unable to make sense of the ancient pictographs, she seeks help from the only person in the area capable of understanding them, an enigmatic billionaire who takes a strange fancy to her. His opinion that she’s chasing demons calls into question everything she believes.

Kirsten’s not about to let superstition scare her away from protecting an innocent ghost. Alas, the demons give her an impossible choice: back off and let a man die—or they take the boy she considers a son.

#3 -Thrall
Agent Kirsten Wren has her fair share of demons to deal with—and some are literal.

Despite discovering the world beyond death is more complicated than simple ghosts, she’s almost got her life in order. Her effort to adopt Evan appears to be on track, no one’s tried to kill her for a whole week, and most unbelievable of all, a billionaire is in love with her.

Kirsten’s bleak childhood has left her with great contempt for the wealthy and a deep mental scar that makes intimacy terrifying. Konstantin’s high-society world is not for her, but thoughts of leaving him make her physically ill.

A series of murders with ritualistic overtones leads her to suspect someone’s using paranormal means to destabilize the nation. Stuck between her tortured past, an even scarier future, and a government doubting her stories of the Abyss, she has a mere week to find the killer before all hell breaks loose.

However, the demons are far closer than she expects.
