If you're able to jailbreak your Kindle, you can install KOReader. Then you can read epubs.

I generally use my android phone to read books, with the FullReader app. When I first started using FullReader some time ago it had horrible lag during page turns and I stopped using it. I just started back up with it recently and notice it's much better now, still a tad bit of lag, but huge improvement. I am thinking of switching to MoonReader Pro though. I used to use the free version of that on my old tablet and it was great.

For magazines I use my old Nexus 7 tablet. It still works great after all this time.

I've got a paperwhite that's a few years old now and has served me well. I go through a somewhat fangled process of using calibre alongside a plug in called "kfx output" to convert epubs into .kfx format which allows for better kerning and left-aligned text on kindles. Next time i'm just gonna get a kobo!

I bought a cheap, old (non-celluar) iPad mini just so I could use Marvin, my all time favorite epub reading app. It's only ~2 ounces heavier than a Kindle paperwhite, plus you get the advantages of a fully-functional (if underpowered) iPad.

cayayofm wrote:+1 for the Kindle Paperwhite. Mine's cute and white and I got it for like $55, a great deal. Screen resolution ain't the best in the biz, but gets the job very done. The screen even illuminates.

True that it doesn't accept ePubs but that gets easily fixed with Calibre. Don't even have to think about it. Just connect the Kindle, click add to device, and the app figures it all out.

+1 for kindle paperwhite with calibre!

My belated recommendation;
Over the last years I have used Asus and Sony tablets - and was satisfied.
Mainly with the reading app MoonReader - excellent.
Lately I read with Lenovo tablet, apart from being a good quality device and not expensive it has no junk application pre-installed!

As for converting e-books to the suitable type. There is no need to install Caliber or any other program - there are plenty of free on line sites for this purpose.
