Lois McMaster Bujold - The Warrior's Apprentice, only because it was the first book I read by her otherwise I would have to list all the Miles Vorkosigan series.
David Drake - Hammer's Slammers. Again, it was the first book I'd read by him.

Miranda proved she's a bit of a dill. I had the door to the fireplace open to put twigs and kindling on the layer of embers that remained from the night before when she decided, "That looks interesting, I must hop in there and investigate." Grabbed her just as she jumped. Dumb cat.

Favourite series -

Nalini Singh - Psy-Changeling. This one is a bit of a cheat on my part seeing as how I've not read read one of her books yet. I'm listing her because a friend I live with collects all her books and would probably shoot me if I didn't include Ms. Singh.
E. E. "Doc" Smith - The Lensman books. The first space opera books I ever read.

Yes! Nalini Singh for the win. I love both the Guild Hunter and Psy-Changeling series. Naasir is my favorite character in the G.H. series and Silver Mercant is my fave in the P.-C. universe. They're supporting characters but they are wonderfully written. :)
