Funny story about this book. I read it shortly after it first came out and at the time, the guy I was living with worked until midnight. He always called me before he started home and this night I told him that I be finishing with the book about when he got home.
So I'm reading and reading, totally enthralled by the story and, as you know, the book ends with him sitting in his office waiting and then his wife touches his shoulder. I closed the book and just sat there, staring straight ahead as I absorbed the ending. Suddenly a hand touches my shoulder, "I'm home," says a low voice at the same time.
I screamed bloody murder and fell off the couch trying to get away, I was so terrified while HE is laughing so hard he almost falls down himself.
Turns out the bastard had snuck in and been watching me for several minutes while I finished the book, just waiting to spring that on me. Gave me nightmares for weeks.
I haven't read a Stephen King novel since. I still greatly admire his abilities, but my lingering stress over that incident keeps me away.
