All in all an excellent, fun yarn. The book is well written, great entertainment with a blistering pace. If you are looking for a deeper meaning, or insight into nerd culture, this is probably not the book for you.

Hmm. I normally feel as you do; books are better than movies. But there are always exceptions. And rp1 was one of them for me.flyboynm wrote:Ready Player One is so much better than what was shown in the movie; that is not uncommon though. I feel that this book along with Armada by Ernest Cline are books one needs to read if they grew up as a child of the 80s.
I am not in deep for this book. But if what I saw was correct -at a glance- rp1 was published in 2011. Around 7-8 years after second life was launched. And if that's true, rp1 makes it a measly advertisement for that world imo. When I was playing SL, it was much more complex and geeky&nerdy than what this book mentioned. So I do believe the writer only told us what he saw irl. Nothing more...
For the movie; i do think Spielberg did a very good job by resurrecting such a rigid dead object and fully animating it. I had a good time watching it, similar to how I enjoyed the red line anime.

I never thought the movie or book looked interesting -- too nerd fan service looking to me.
However, after I saw this today I thought I'll give it a shot:

The movie was utter crap, so I guess the book must suck too. I wouldn't waste any time with it.
I was in the beginning and shall be forever. The first and the last. The world come full circle. I am time, the destroyer. I was the wind and the stars before this. Before planets. Before heaven and hell. And when all is done, I will be wind again, to blow this world as dust back into endless space.

The book is best described as impressively mediocre IMO. It's not completely terrible, but it's fairly basic in its plot structure and it's very obvious that the protagonist is a self-insert for the author, and the love interest is all of the author's barely disguised preferences/fetishes. Again, it's not terrible and I don't think anyone I've ever talked to about the book has hated it; it's just that none of them (or I) felt strongly any which way about it. If you ever decide to read the book, you probably won't finish it and think "Wow, I wasted my time reading this" but you also probably won't recommend it to anyone either. The book is best described as a fairly predictable nostalgia-fest that's just okay, especially if you have nothing else going on at the time.
