I would recommend you The Beast Arises series (Space Marines campaign across universe; 12 books), Eisenhorn trilogy (Inquisitor adventures; 3 books), Cadia Stands & Cadian Honour (Cadian/Eye of Terror war; 2 books) and Gaunt's Ghosts (Commissar Ibram Gaunt adventures; 22 books). You don't need to read all, just pick or taste a theme you like!

Alternatively, you can also read Dawn of War (PC game novels; 3 books).

Skip Beast Arises series, it's mediocre at best. The best introduction to 40k is either Eisenhorn trilogy (Inquisition; kind of adventure/mystery/crime), Gaunt's Ghosts (Imperial Guard, first three books are a bit slow).

It's easier to recommend books if we know what you like about Warhammer 40K as there are hundreds of books

Stay away from Dawn of War novels!

I would highly recommend picking up the new 9th edition core rulebook if you'd like an overview of the universe in general.

For actual books, the new "Indomitus" or "Avenging Son" novels are probably a good start - they're a soft reboot of the 40K universe for the new edition, and are written with people who are somewhat new to the fiction.

The Eisenhorn series is excellent, but kind of assumes you know a bit about the universe. However, it's written from a human POV, so you should be able to keep up with the story pretty easily, especially since you've played the games.

Have you tried Avenging Son: Dawn of Fire? It's not a bad place to start if you are new to Black Library novels.
