Golden retriever branded 'broken' as viewers crease at his unusual resting positions

It almost looks like the pooch is sitting down, but the wrong way up.
Image

Duke, a lovable golden from Cheshire, struck a chord when his hilarious antics were uploaded by TikTok user @goldenlifeofduke who joked in the caption: "I definitely wonder". Duke is captured balancing on his head with rump sticking in the air, while his mouth gapes open for no reason.

A blissed-out expression is plastered on his face.

The pooch's cheesy grin won over viewers on TikTok, where the video had more than 100,000 "likes" and more than 1,000 comments.

Can an Army of Feral Cats Help Solve New York City’s Rat Problem?

Image

Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) is a widely used practice aimed for controlling feral cat populations. Cats are trapped by professionals or trained volunteers, taken to a veterinarian for spaying/neutering and vaccination, and then returned to the same area where they were found. There they resume life, minus the ability to breed. In New York City, where feral cats number in the tens of thousands, TNR is a critical, privately funded service.

But who in their right mind would be willing to play host to a cluster of feral cats on their property? Turns out, a lot of people, all intrigued by a tantalizing byproduct of maintaining a colony.

“The cats stay put and it keeps the rats away,” said Massey, an instructor in TNR. “I don’t think you have to like cats to realize that they are nature’s solution to one of our problems. The cat employment rate is booming."

Mirror cabin over Amata River

This mirror cabin hangs over the river and is the latest attraction for Latvian tourists seeking a quiet place close to nature.

The mirror cabin, which resembles a greenhouse, hangs on cables and can move across the river by remote control.

The cabin can accommodate two people over the night with prices starting at 160 euro ($188). Guests can also pay an additional fee to receive breakfast or dinner sourced from local producers.

Despite the lack of modern amenities like shower or toilet, this unconventional accommodation is fully booked for the summer holiday season.

A quite good place for forest lover who seeks solitude

'Houdini' kitten rescued from three vehicles in one day in Norfolk

Image

Rescuers had to partially dismantle each of the vehicles, with the whole operation lasting several hours in the town of King's Lynn.

The RSPCA was called to a car park when a member of the public heard a cat crying from a Volkswagen Golf.
With the permission of the car's owner, firefighters lifted it up to try and free the cat.

It was then taken to a garage where some of the wheels and bodywork were taken off to reach the cat underneath the engine. But before it could be captured, the cat escaped and ran under a BMW and did the same.

The BMW's owner was traced and the car was partially taken apart, but the cat then dashed under the RSPCA van.

The van required less dismantling since it was higher from the ground and a firefighter managed to catch the cat in his arms before she could escape again.

RSPCA animal collection officer Natalie Read, who has since adopted the cat, said: "This kitten was proving a little Houdini - but there's no way we could leave her in any of the vehicles or alone in the middle of a busy town centre, so we just had to try again!"

Her colleague Naemi Kilby said: "The kitten was so terrified by what had happened - we had to get her - because she could have been seriously hurt or killed if she had been inside a car engine for too long while moving."

The kitten is believed to be between six and 12 weeks old and has been named Lohse.

The RSCPA said it is likely the cat travelled to the car park in another vehicle from a farm 10 miles away.

A 65-year-old salesman had no work during lockdown and wanted to find a new way to relax and reduce stress while sitting in his garden.

Paul Vaughan then proceeded to build his very own budget hot tub using an old, pre-formed pond base that he dug out from his garden.

The water is cleaned using the old fish pond filtration system, which he runs through 20m of hose pipe sitting on his concrete path, to heat the water.

And just for a laugh, Paul added an outboard motor—to create swirling jacuzzi bubbles—and he’s been relaxing in the homemade tub in Bridgend, Wales, every day since.

(He took a picture of the outboard motor just once for a joke, but, of course “for safety reasons” he never sits in the tub at the same time as the prop is spinning.)

“I originally used the material as a fish pond years ago, and kept it with the intention of once again having a fish pond. But with the fabulous weather, and not much to do at the moment as a result of COVID, I decided to make a hot tub.”

“It took me a couple of days to get it sorted, but that was because originally the water was too cold to get into!”

Beavers return to Britain and could help prevent floods

Image

Hunted to extinction in Britain 400 years ago, the water-loving beaver is being reintroduced in “trial” enclosures across England.

A British government study suggests the herbivorous rodent’s habit of building dams in rivers could help prevent flooding by drastically slowing the flow of water as well as purifying water polluted by agricultural fertilizer.

The beavers are being sourced from the wild population in Scotland, where they were reestablished as a native species four years ago.

Ecologist Derek Gow hails beavers as “ecosystem engineers”. He says, “They turn landscapes that are largely dead into environments that wildlife can recolonize.” [Source: The Guardian]

Reggie the Cockatoo Loves His New Job as Office Assistant.

Image

Reggie the cockatoo may not be great at his job, but what he lacks in efficiency, he makes up for in cuteness. A few days ago, USA's Cincinnati Zoo & Botanical Garden shared a video of their newest office assistant working hard at his new job. The video shows Reggie the attention-loving white cockatoo working hard to make copies, helping out his human colleagues.

According to Cincinnati Zoo, the bird enjoys extra attention from humans, and therefore volunteers his time helping out their office team members.

The video shared by the zoo shows Reggie picking papers off the copier and promptly dropping them on the floor. "Our new office assistant. Reggie the cockatoo enjoys extra attention from humans so he spends his mornings helping out some of our office team members. He's gotten quite good at getting the papers off the copier," the zoo wrote while sharing Reggie's video.

Lopburi is best known for its big monkey population. They live close to humans in the urban areas and around Phra Prang Sam Yod, the province’s iconic ancient shrine.

Earlier this week, Mr. Sasaluk Rattanachai shared a video and photos on his Facebook, showing hundreds of monkeys from 2 “gangs” fighting in the province.

One gang is known by the locals as the “temple monkeys”, which live around Phra Prang Sam Yod, while another is known as the “city monkeys,” living in the municipality area. Both territories are divided by the city’s northern train track.

Normally, the 2 gangs live in peace and don’t interfere with one another – but there’s an exception for everything.

Although some say it’s a bad omen that the monkeys were fighting one another, there’s an explanation behind this chaotic incident.

Turns out, some charitable folks left a lot of yogurt drinks for the monkeys to feast on. However, the drinks were placed in the city monkeys’ territory. When the temple monkeys crossed the track to get their share, the fight broke out.

The brawl caused a traffic jam in the area for a good 15-20 minutes before they stopped fighting and returned to their zones.

30-year-old stash of beer and gum found in library's mystery section

Image
Workers at the Walla Walla Public Library in Washington state were dismantling a shelf in the mystery section when they found a stash of beer and chewing gum believed to date from the 1980s.

Aug. 14 (UPI) -- A Washington state library's mystery section was found to contain a real-life enigma when removing a corner panel revealed a stash of beer and chewing gum from the 1980s.

The Walla Walla Public Library said employees have been performing renovations at the facility during the COVID-19 shutdown, and they recently removed a corner panel from the shelf housing the mystery book section and found a disintegrated paper bag containing five unopened cans of Hamm's beer and an opened back of Godzilla Heads gum.

Library officials said their research determined Godzilla Heads gum dates from the 1980s and the Hamm's beer cans don't include health warnings that were required from 1988 on, leading staff to believe the snack stash is more than 30 years old.

"It looked like somebody had just stashed it there and maybe thought they could get it later ... but there was no way to get it out," library director Erin Wells told CNN. "There were probably six beers that they bought and there was only five that we found so they might not have been thinking straight when they did it."

The City of Walla Walla said the "artifacts" were transferred "to another city facility."

"The abandoned relics now reside in the Sudbury Landfill," the city said.

Six-year-old Toronto girl reunited with stolen birthday present – 11-month-old puppy named King

Image

TORONTO -- A six-year-old Toronto girl has been reunited with her stolen birthday present, an 11-month-old puppy named King.

On the afternoon of Aug. 5, Elena Gonzalez was walking along Gihon Spring Drive, near Steeles Avenue and Martin Grove Road, with her mother, her brother and their two off-leash dogs.

The mother, Cassandra Gonzalez, told CTV News Toronto on Thursday that their dogs were a short distance in front of them when she turned her back to assist her son back into his stroller. She said that’s when she heard a car drive up “really fast.”

According to police, a man in a black four-door vehicle pulled up alongside the dogs, got out of his vehicle and picked one of them up. The man then got back into his vehicle and fled the area, officers said.

Since that day, Elena Gonzalez had been asking her mother to take her outside every day to look for King.

Image

On Friday, the family was reunited with King after the American Bulldog-Doberman mix was located by a citizen, police said.

“He was taken to the vet and is in good health,” officers said.

Police added that the investigation is ongoing and no charges have been laid.

Nearly naked man suspected of stealing Coors beer truck in Santa Rosa

Image

A man, wearing nothing but boxer shorts in the pattern of the American flag and sneakers, got behind the wheel of a beer delivery truck that was idling in front of a liquor store in southwest Santa Rosa on Thursday and drove away, according to police.

A customer who saw the heist went inside MD Liquors on Sebastopol Road, alerting a delivery driver who was stocking Coors Banquet brews to what appeared to have been an opportunistic - and probably drunken- theft of the yellow truck just before noon, Santa Rosa police Sgt. Jeneane Kucker said.

The beer distribution company tracked the missing truck with a GPS device in the vehicle and alerted police it appeared to be parked somewhere behind a McDonald’s restaurant about 3 miles away on Yolanda Avenue, Kucker said. Officers found the truck with the classic red Coors logo abandoned in a vacant lot, but witnesses reported seeing a shirtless man running toward Highway 101.

A man later identified as Matt Hermsmeyer, 46, was spotted dodging traffic as he ran east across six lanes of Highway 101 and disappeared somewhere on the western side, Kucker said. A police dog team and the Sonoma County Sheriff’s helicopter crew joined the search for Hermsmeyer, who was finally found crouching in the bushes near the Hearn Avenue ?overpass, Kucker said.

He was booked into the Sonoma County Jail in lieu of $10,000 bail on suspicion of multiple charges including felony grand theft and misdemeanor drunken driving, jail records show. Kucker said the man had no listed address and appeared to be homeless.

The cargo hatch was unlocked but nothing was taken.

“He stole, he parked, he ran, he got arrested,” Kucker said.

Beautiful Mural in Warsaw Eats Up Smog, Purifying The Air Equal to 720 Trees

Image

Warsaw, Poland became the latest city to feature public art projects that also clean city air, as a giant mural made of special, sun-activated, smog-cleaning pigments was painted by local artists.

Organized by the sportswear company Converse as part of their City-Forests campaign, the mural was produced using photocatalytic paint with titanium dioxide that attracts airborne pollutants before converting them into harmless nitrates through a chemical process involving sunlight.

Through this process the mural reportedly purifies the surrounding air equal to 720 trees, and when the campaign is finished, the murals spread across several countries should be doing the work of 3,000.

The mural was erected on a building facing a popular metro stop and features a collection of smiling flowers entangled among high rise buildings. Polish artists Maciek Polak and Dawid Ryski designed the image, which was executed by the local artist hub Good Looking Studio, involving expert muralists.

Amid the flowers are the words “Create Together For Tomorrow,” a positive message to inspire change, which Converse officials feel will help welcome people who are returning to their daily commutes after periods of COVID-19 isolation.

“…for the time being everything has slowed down. At Converse we saw this as an opportunity to speak up and help produce fresh air through painting murals,” said a spokesman.

After Bangkok in Thailand, Warsaw represents the second city to finish a mural, among 13 set to erect the City-Forests murals—Belgrade, Lima, Sydney, Jakarta, Manila, Sao Paulo, Santiago, Johannesburg, Melbourne, Bogota, and Panama City.

However, Converse is not the only ones using these special paints to clean the air. Dutch designer Studio Roosegaarde erected a series of billboards in Monterrey, Mexico, which use the same photocatalytic paint as the artwork in Warsaw.

Each billboard there generates the same amount of clean air as 30 trees every 6 hours—and it can function for up to five years—tackling some of the pollution that gets lodged in the Mexican valley, beyond the reach of strong wind currents.

Daan Roosegaarde, the mastermind behind the billboards, is an expert with smog-free design projects. For Beijing, he produced the world’s largest air purifier, which filters 30,000 cubic meters of clean air per hour — and turns the pollutants into literal diamonds that are then sold to pay for the construction of new devices.

Unsurprisingly, the Dutchmen is a cyclist at heart, and hopes his devices can make Beijing a cycling city once again.

“Beijing used to be an iconic bicycle city,” said Roosegaarde. “Together with Chinese and Dutch expertise we will bring back the bicycle as a cultural icon of China and as the next step towards smog free cities.”
