Gerber Baby! Zane Kahin of Florida Named as 2021 Spokesbaby: 'Our Little Comedian,' Says His Mom

Zane's mother Erin Kahin was diagnosed with breast cancer at 27 and unsure how treatment would affect fertility. However, she "surprisingly conceived naturally" and gave birth to Zane in February

Let the giggles begin!

On Monday, Gerber announced the winner of its 11th annual Photo Search, crowning 4½-month-old Zane Kahin of Winter Park, Florida, as the 2021 Gerber Spokesbaby, plus the honorary role as Gerber's Executive Committee as Chief Growing Officer (CGO) for the year.

Zane, according to a press release, captivated the judges with his "cheerful attitude, infectious giggles and playful smile that can light up any room."

Erin Kahin, Zane's mom, says in a statement, "Zane is our little comedian. He loves to crack himself up and even wakes up laughing."

She adds that their "shining light" baby beat "all odds" when he was born Feb. 3. "When I was diagnosed with breast cancer at 27 years old and a newly single woman, my doctors were unsure how the impact of chemotherapy, radiation and a double mastectomy would impact my ability to have children. After getting married to my husband over a year ago, we surprisingly conceived naturally and had a near perfect pregnancy."

"Our family continues to enjoy every moment and look at life with appreciation and a sense of humor," says Erin.

The original Gerber baby in the brand's iconic logo was Ann Turner Cook. In 2010, Photo Search was launched, inspired by the "countless photos received over the years from parents who see their little ones in" Gerber's logo.

"Photo Search is a moment that brings families together in celebration year after year, and the Gerber family is delighted to welcome Zane as this year's Gerber Spokesbaby and first-ever Chief Growing Officer," Mohini Joshi, vice president of marketing at Gerber, says in a statement.

"By recognizing that every baby is a Gerber baby, we celebrate the diversity of families, whether that's where we're from, who our parents are or the circumstances in which baby came into the world," Joshi adds.

As the winner, Zane has the opportunity to serve as official Chief Taste Tester to taste and review new baby food products, provide the Gerber executive team "advice" about what babies need for the future and guest star as Gerber CEO for a day, helping make business decisions that foster company and every baby's growth.

Zane's family will also be awarded a $25,000 cash prize, free Gerber products for up to one year, and a CGO wardrobe valued at $1,000 provided by Gerber Childrenswear.

Wyoming man calls to ask why he wasn't arrested, is arrested
A Wyoming man who asked a sheriff's dispatcher why he hadn't been arrested soon found himself in handcuffs.

The 62-year-old man called the Campbell County Sheriff's Office on Thursday to ask why he hadn't been arrested after deputies raided his house the previous day.

Asked why he should be arrested, the man said meth use, Undersheriff Quentin Reynolds said.

The man also told a dispatcher 10 young men were following him.

Nobody had raided the man's house or was planning to arrest him, Reynolds said.

After the call, a deputy spotted the man driving and followed when he pulled off the road, the Gillette News Record reported.

The man allegedly told the deputy he had used methamphetamine a day and a half before and was still high. He did poorly on sobriety tests and was arrested for driving under the influence of a controlled substance.

Iowa Man Calls In Bomb Threat Because He Didn’t Get Sauce For Chicken McNuggets
06/28/2021 04:46 pm ET*
Things got heated.

Image

Police say an Iowa man attempted to get revenge on his local McDonald’s after he was shafted out of sauce for his Chicken McNuggets ― but things blew up in his face.

Ankeny police arrested Robert Golwitzer Jr. on Saturday night after he allegedly threatened to blow up the restaurant and punch an employee over missing condiments, according to ABC affiliate WHO.

Investigators told the station that the 42-year-old suspect called the fast-food chain after discovering his order was incorrect.

After police contacted Golwitzer, the sauce-craving suspect admitted to making the threats.

Authorities arrested Golwitzer Saturday night and charged him with a felony charge of making a false report of explosive or incendiary device, according to CBS affiliate KCCI.

On Sunday, he was released from Polk County Jail after posting bond.

People have made some really bizarre bogus bomb threats before.

For instance, in January 2019, a 23-year-old college student in Rennes, France, called in a fake bomb threat so he wouldn’t have to see his parents.

In November 2018, a New Orleans man accused of threatening to blow up a local restaurant told police he was referring to a bowel movement.

Naked sunbather chases wild boar through park after it steals his laptop bag
Image
A naked sunbather was seen chasing wild boar through a park after it stole his laptop bag.
Amusing photographs from Germany show the man running after the animal to try and claim the plastic bag back.
But the cheeky boar and its two piglets appear to be too quick for the sunbather, who can't keep up with their speedy little trotters.
As the incident unfolds, groups of friends and family sat on the grass watch on and laugh.
Heads are seen turning in surprise and amusement in the hilarious photographs.
The incident happened at Teufelssee Lake - a bathing spot in the Grunwell Forest in Berlin, Germany.

Meerkats at Drusillas Park predict England will win in their match against Germany

Image
The meerkats pick England as their favourite to win.

The Meerkats at Drusillas Park have predicted that England will win against Germany in the Euros later today.

They made the call during an enrichment exercise at the park, which saw all the Meerkats firmly side with England.

Check out the video here

The whistle blew and although the predictions got off to a slow start - the meerkats quickly made their prediction clear as they pushed forward to get behind England.

Head Keeper Gemma Romanis said:

“We’re all very excited to see what England can do against Germany and all of our keepers are getting behind the team and hoping they can make the quarter-finals!

We thought what better way to support England, than to than to treat our meerkat group to their favourite mealworms while they enjoyed some football themed enrichment!

There are two twin pups in the group and they thoroughly enjoyed all the activities!”

And to back up the meerkat predictions, the Bristol Zoo pigs also predict England will beat Germany in Euro 2020 knockout match :)

A Leopard Cub Is Hiding In This Wildlife Image. Can You Find It?
Image
New Delhi: Riddles are engaging, they draw us towards them. When they include the wildlife, they get more interesting. A riddle is now doing the rounds on the Internet, showing – One…Two…leopards? First posted on Twitter by Mohan Thomas, a wildlife and nature photographer, the image shows a leopard laying its aerodynamic body on a tree branch, balancing its front part above the bough and leaving the tail hung below it. Its mysterious, wide eyes keep looking for its prey or any possible threat. That's one. Mr Thomas has asked Twitter users to find the other, a cub whose face he says is visible in the image.

Since being posted, many people have tried and some have been successful in finding the cub, which seems to be avoiding all the attention the fully grown leopard is seeking and has camouflaged itself somewhere.

Was it challenging to find the cub? How challenging? Must not be more than the person behind that camera. Or was it?

Nude sunbathers rescued from Australian woods after fleeing deer

Police in the Australian state of New South Wales say they have levied fines against two nude beachgoers who had to be rescued after being spooked by a deer and running into a forest.

The two men were breaking coronavirus lockdowns by sunbathing naked on a remote beach south of Sydney, NSW Police Commissioner Mick Fuller told reporters Monday, but worsened their offense when, after being startled by a deer, they fled into the Royal National Park and got lost.

The men, aged 30 and 49, were fined $760 for breaking the COVID-19 rules after authorities came to their rescue Sunday evening.

Residents of Sydney and many other parts of the state were placed under stay-at-home orders earlier in the day as Australia scrambled to counter the fast-spreading Delta variant of the coronavirus.

Even though the men were fined, Fuller said their actions cost the community more because of the resources needed to track them down.

"It's difficult to legislate against idiots," the commissioner said. "Clearly, by putting people at risk by leaving home without a proper reason, and then getting lost in a national park, diverting important resources away from the health operation, they should be embarrassed."

Stolen Picasso and Mondrian Paintings Recovered by Greek Police

Two stolen paintings by Pablo Picasso and Piet Mondrian have finally been found by Greek police. Nearly ten years ago, on January 9, 2012, a group of criminals were able to infiltrate the Greek National Gallery and steal two oil paintings by Mondrian and Picasso. Greek police have now reportedly found the two paintings, the first break in the nine years since the theft took place.

Police have not yet made any arrests or released how and where the paintings were recovered. The burglary was pre-meditated and deftly executed, lasting less than ten minutes. The burglars went into the museum the night before the theft and set off the alarm system, causing the museum’s security team to disable one of the alarms.

Along with the Mondrian and Picasso works that were recovered today, the thieves took another piece– a drawing by the Italian 16th-century painter Guglielmo Caccia. As they attempted to steal a fourth painting–another Mondrian–the guards approached them and they dropped it in order to make their escape.

Stolen Picasso and Mondrian paintings were important assets of Greece’s art collection
The Picasso painting stolen in the theft was a 1939 female bust, “Woman’s Head” rendered in his distinctive, signature cubist style that went on to define a movement of 20th century art-making. The piece was gifted to Greece by Picasso himself in 1949 “in homage to the Greek people” to show respect for the Greek resistance to the Nazi occupation during World War II.

The other painting recovered was Dutch painter Mondrian’s 1905 painting, “Mill,” which is a representational painting of a windmill that precedes the more well known, geometric abstraction in his body of later work.

The National Gallery is Greece‘s foremost art institution. Featuring mainly works from or related to Greece dating from the 14th to the 20th centuries, the halls of the National Gallery of Greece provide a complete image of the development of not only Greek art but also of Greek history.

The museum boasts a collection over 20,000 priceless works of art, including paintings, drawings, and sculptures, and was founded in 1878.

Amputee Who Can Only Walk for 20 Minutes at a Time Climbs England’s Three Highest Peaks

An amputee who can only walk for 20 minutes at a time has climbed England’s three highest peaks—a feat that took him 27 hours.

42-year-old Ben Lovell had never climbed a mountain—and in 2017 he had to have his right leg amputated due to a blood clot.

Image

These days the strain on his leg means he can walk 20 minutes, covering about a mile, before he has to take off his prosthetic and rest before climbing again.

But the former road worker scaled the Lake District’s Helvellyn in seven hours, Scafell in nine hours, and Scafell Pike after another 11 hours of trekking.

The father-of-two raised thousands of pounds to pay for kids with prosthetic limbs to join his fitness boot camp and holiday retreat in Tenerife, called AmpCamp.

The Yorkshire man said: “It’s never about how long it takes me; it’s just about getting it done.

Image

“Helvellyn was really hard and pretty scary because we lost the track and ended up climbing the side of the peak.

“I was in a lot of pain but that’s a mental thing and you’ve just got to get past it.”

Of walking on boggy ground, he explained: “It puts such a strain on your other joints and other leg, and using crutches, which I have to do, is really hard on your back and shoulders.”

After Ben’s amputation four years ago, he suffered anxiety and depression, but now goes to the gym five or six times a week.

In the past few years, he’s completed a sponsored 13-mile walk round a reservoir on crutches and a 15,000-foot parachute jump.

The reason he founded AmpCamp? “With these holidays we just want to give people a place to go where they can feel safe and confident, and where they can relax without stigma, and if you need to take your leg off for a bit everyone understands.”

Ancient Greek golden death masks of Mycenae still an unknown, says archaeologist
Delving into mystery

Image

The imposing golden mask of Agamemnon welcomes visitors at the National Archaeological Museum in Athens, standing out among other finds from the royal cemetery of the ancient city of Mycenae on the Peloponnese peninsula dating back to the 16th century BC.

The five in total golden funeral masks and the full face and body coverings of an infant displayed at the museum are still engulfed in mystery, and are a unique case in ancient Greece, Constantinos Paschalidis, curator of Antiquities at the museum, told Xinhua in a recent interview.

Mistaken identity

When German archaeologist Heinrich Schliemann discovered the elegant mask with the intense facial characteristics in 1876, he was certain he had found the tomb of the Mycenaean king Agamemnon mentioned in Homer's epic poem Iliad.

The mask was later dated four centuries before the legendary Trojan War, but is still world-famous as Agamemnon's mask.

"Nowadays we say that it is a conventional name. Agamemnon is a literature person, like Romeo and Juliet. He never existed as a historical person, but we love such connotations, therefore we keep the name due to the romantic aspect of archaeology," Paschalidis said.

Most of the Mycenaen masks at the museum are rather simple and do not depict individual features with the exception of Agamemnon's, which is more or less the portrait of a man who died at the age of around 30, he noted.

The man was bearded, with a mustache and a long "Greek" nose, and whoever he was, he was buried as a king, with all honors, covered with gold, the expert said.

The Mycenaen death masks are very precious and rare objects which were created for very important people, both men and women, he said. Three of them depict men and two women. A few meters further are the golden sheets covering the face and body of a baby, a girl most likely, a few months old.

The sheets of pure gold, roughly 24 carats in today's terms, were hammered from the backside. The repousse technique was used to form the shape, according to Paschalidis.

"There is a huge question regarding the wealth and the gold of Mycenae. Actually, we don't know where it came from and how it started," he told Xinhua.

"We know that these people used to be poor farmers and cattle breeders for centuries, living in the Argolide [region] or the Peloponnese [peninsula] in general and within one generation or one generation and a half around the year 1,600 BC they became extremely wealthy, extremely rich and they started burying their dead covered with gold and exotic materials coming from all over the known or unknown world of that time," he added.

An open question

Together with the precious objects that came from the island of Crete, other regions of the Balkan peninsula and from Egypt, it seems that also new, fresh and extravagant ideas like covering the faces of dead with gold, reached Mycenae by 1600 BC.

"We don't know where exactly the idea came from and who brought it, but it looks like they never had such a tradition before, it only happened in this royal cemetery with these people and it ended with these people. We don't have a tradition going on in the later centuries. Therefore, we consider this phenomenon a unique phenomenon which has to do with Mycenae and these five dead plus the baby, the royal girl," Paschalidis said.

"If one dares to propose something we may say that covering the faces of the dead was a trait which happened in Egypt at that time in the Second Transitional period to the New Kingdom, but then again this doesn't look Egyptian at all. Therefore, keeping the answer strict and archaeological, let's say, correct, we may say it's an open question and a mystery," the curator said.

The masks of Mycenae were offerings to the deceased and not gifts to the gods, he noted.

Paschalidis warmly welcomed the latest great archaeological discovery at the Sanxingdui Ruins site in China's Sichuan Province, where in 2021's spring archaeologists unearthed hundreds of objects, including gold masks, dating to about 1200 BC.

"The recent finds in Sanxingdui ancient city in Sichuan Province is great news for the whole archaeological world and we all feel very happy and excited about it," he said.

"This is more or less a huge archaeological discovery and it is a huge joy and a cause for celebration for archaeologists all over the world," Paschalidis said.

Toronto clinic administers record-breaking 26,000+ doses in one day

Image

TORONTO -- Toronto achieved a significant milestone in its vaccine campaign after 25,000 doses were administered at the Scotiabank Arena clinic Sunday, possibly setting a world record in shots given in a single day in one clinic.

The temporary mass immunization clinic set up inside the home of the Raptors and the Maple Leafs also broke the national and North American records, the city said.

A total of 26,771 doses were administered at Scotiabank Arena - 978 first doses and 25,793 second doses, according to officials. Of those who got vaccinated, 1,295 were youths and 25,476 were adults.

Dubbed "Our Winning Shot," the event was held to encourage residents to get their first and second doses as a more infectious variant of COVID-19 becomes dominant in the province.

The city partnered with Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment, Scotiabank, Michael Garron Hospital, and the University Health Network for the event.

Image

After getting their vaccine, people received a free rally towel. Fifty pairs of Maple Leafs and Raptors tickets were also given away. Several TV and radio personalities, including the teams' mascots, were also present at the clinic to bring entertainment.

One of the people who received their vaccine at the clinic was Mayor John Tory, who proclaimed June 27, 2021, as Toronto Vaccine Day.

"It's a well-oiled machine. It's extraordinary. Twenty-five thousand people will come through here today, and it really seems to be well organized," Tory told CP24 Sunday morning after receiving his second dose.

The mayor said vaccination is the key to getting life back to normal.

"It's exciting to be in the arena, even for me. I've been there many, many times…but there's nothing like the excitement of being in there when one of our teams is playing," Tory said.

"This is about getting back to a life that we love."

As of Sunday, 76 per cent of Ontario adults have received their first dose of a vaccine, while just over 35 per cent have received their second dose.

“That means there's 24 per cent [of people] who haven't even had a first dose, let alone a second, and they need to get vaccinated,” Tory said.

All of the “Our Winning Shot” appointments were fully booked ahead of the Sunday. However, the city added 2,000 more Moderna vaccine appointments for walk-ins later in the day.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau also reacted to the achievement, tweeting, “Congratulations to everyone involved in setting this record – whether you volunteered your time or rolled up your sleeve, thank you for doing your part.”

Image

One of the 400 vaccinators at the clinic is Dr. Michael Warner, a critical care doctor at MGH.

"We still do have patients who are now chronically, critically ill from their COVID-19 infection. But in many cases, that infection was acquired two or three months ago. It's been about three weeks since we've admitted a new patient with COVID-19. And I hope we don't ever admit another patient with COVID-19," Warner said.

"I'm incredibly hopeful. People want their life back and vaccination is the way to do it."

Dr. Andrew Boozary, the executive director of social medicine at UHN and one of the vaccinators at the clinic, said the vaccination numbers in the province in the past few days have been phenomenal.

"I've never seen anything like this," he said. "I think we just all needed this boost, where we're at in the summer, and we're hopeful that we can see this momentum continue… It's great to see smiles and hear the music. We've seen this in different pockets of the city, but for people to pull together like this."

Before Sunday’s event, the clinic at Thorncliffe Community Hub set the record for most doses administered in a single day in May when more than 10,000 shots were jabbed. Meanwhile, a clinic in Texas held the North American record after administering 17,003 doses in one day.

To mark Sunday's milestone, the Toronto sign at Nathan Phillips Square was lit in pink in support of all those who received their vaccine.

Honda Built Shoe Navigation To Make Walking Easier For The Visually Impaired
This new device could bring personal mobility up to date

Bradley Brownell

Screenshot: Honda

In Japan Honda has established a startup accelerator called IGNITION, which aims to develop new mobility business ventures with funding and marketing. The first company to be launched from this accelerator is called Ashirase, and aims to develop an in-shoe navigation system to help support the visually impaired with walking and routines. The company hopes to have a viable product to market before the end of March 2023.

Honda has a history of making devices intended for improving pedestrian life for people who need a little extra assistance. Anything to help increase the autonomy of the visually impaired is surely to be a great add-on for their lives.

The device fits around each foot, and includes a motion sensor attached to the outside of the shoe. Pairing with a smart phone app, the device will vibrate based on routes set in the app. The left side of the left foot will vibrate to indicate a left turn (and the opposite for a right turn), while the toes of each foot will vibrate to maintain a forward trajectory.

While the device isn’t going to replace the old standard white cane any time soon, this is a step in the right direction (get it?). By allowing the visually impaired to navigate without constantly keeping direction and distances in mind, this device makes it possible for the user to walk in a more relaxed fashion. Focusing on the things around them, rather than what direction they need to be pointed, also makes walking safer.

Japan estimates the number of visually impaired people is currently around 1.6 million, and growing. The forecast estimates that some 2 million Japanese citizens will require visual assistance by 2030.

Wataru Chino, representative director of Ashirase, Inc.:

“An accident suffered by one of my family members motivated me to take action to realize safer and more free mobility for visually impaired people. I developed the Ashirase and applied to IGNITION, Honda’s new business creation program, which led to the establishment of Ashirase, Inc. I am sure that we will face many obstacles as we work toward the market launch of Ashirase; however, we will overcome such obstacles one by one and devote ourselves wholeheartedly to realize the freedom of mobility for visually impaired people.”

Rewilding: large-scale nature restoration project announced for England

Image

The barren fells of the Yorkshire Dales attract many a neoprene-clad rambler, but the celebrated scenery is not as nature intended. Overgrazing has maintained a state of oddly beautiful bleakness in parts of the uplands, and left nature with limited opportunities to flourish. A similar story has played out elsewhere in the lofty reaches of the UK.

Offering an “alternative future” for the nation’s fells is a large-scale nature restoration project led by the Yorkshire Wildlife Trust (YWT). Launched last week, the project looks to turn 3,000 acres of heavily-grazed hills in the Yorkshire Dales into a biodiverse ecosystem where native wildlife, including red squirrels, cuckoos and black grouse, can thrive.

The project, called Wild Ingleborough, will see the restoration of depleted peatlands and the expansion of native woodland, both of which act as vital carbon sinks. Around 30,000 trees will be planted in total, but most of the new woodland will be realised simply by giving nature space to reclaim the land – also known as “passive rewilding”.

As well as sucking up CO2 and boosting biodiversity, Wild Ingleborough could help protect the region from flooding, as trees and shrubs act as a drag on floodwater. The project is also likely to amplify the region’s tourism potential, amid growing interest in nature restoration projects, as highlighted by the popularity of the Knepp Estate in West Sussex.

“Ingleborough is one of the most iconic and cherished landscapes in our great county,” said Rachael Bice, CEO of the Yorkshire Wildlife Trust. “By intervening carefully, we will see the landscape of the dales transform; restoring natural process and communities of plants and animals, which will help to secure and enrich the future of Yorkshire’s residents and visitors too.”

Wild Ingleborough is a partnership between YWT, Natural England, The University of Leeds, the United Bank of Carbon, the Woodland Trust and WWF. It is one of the first projects in the UK that seeks to re-establish the tree line in the nation’s uplands. The WWF described it as a “blueprint for restoration”.

“Through this project, we want to show that a wilder world is a more stable one, with nature more resilient and able to adapt to change,” said Tanya Steele, chief executive at WWF. “We hope to create a rich, diverse landscape for people and wildlife to thrive.”

World’s Longest Wildlife Bridge Could Cross the Mississippi, So ‘Buffalo Can Roam’

Image

Image

For thousands of cross-country tourists, the Mississippi River is one which is for crossing, not seeing. But what if the crossing bridge was a beautiful pedestrian walkway filled with American bison?

The aptly named Bison Bridge is a proposition to reconnect America’s most iconic animal with its historic habitat in the most creative of ways—by repurposing an aged bridge slated for demolition as a wildlife crossing which provides safe passage for bison herds.

When local Mississippi River advocate and President & Founder of Living Lands & Waters Chad Pregracke proposed the idea for a Bison Bridge National Park to span the river and connect the Quad Cities spanning the states of Iowa and Illinois, it caught on immediately, and quickly earned endorsements and publicity.

Man wakes up to find he drunkenly changed name to John Cena - and he's not even a fan

A 23-year-old has shared how he woke up with more than just a hangover after a night of drinking with his pals after they dared him to change his name John Cena

How far would you be willing to go to win a bet?

One young man was recently bold enough to change his name after his friends dared him to do so during a night of drinking.

Lewis Oldfield, 23, woke up the following morning with a lot more than a fuzzy head, as he soon remembered he had splashed the cash to change his name to that of WWE star John Cena.

The professional wrestler, 44, has also appeared in a number of films, including the Transformers spin-off Bumblebee and the new Fast & Furious 9.

But perhaps the most amusing part of the whole thing - Lewis isn't even a wrestling fan.

Speaking to The Sun, the restaurant shift leader from Bradford, explained: "We’d had a few drinks and were play-wrestling. We were just messing around, pretending to do announcements like in WWE and one of my friends was introducing John Cena.

"One thing led to another and they dared me to change my name to John Cena.

"I was going to get a tattoo saying it but did this instead. I always follow through with dares so I just did it.
