Are recent samsung updates preventing rooting? I have an S4 that I plan on rooting but I couldn't find a guide on how to do it and some post saying that it was risky.

I know it's an old post, but did you root in the end. I found many tutorials for your device. As For the risks, well, there are many risks when tampering with a phone, but rooting is fairly risk free. It's what you do to it afterwards that can cause bricking etc. I have a rooted htc1 x +, but before I made the decision to root I spent weeks and weeks learning about root and how to root, moreover, whether I really needed to.
I found this, it might help you decide...http://lifehacker.com/rooted-vs-unrooted-android-your-best-arguments-1599101019

@deniedPeon: It all depends on the Samsung model and concerned android version you're referring to. Lately, after Lollipop appearance it turned into a major pitfall task to overcome -- access became blocked at the bootloading level which led to many cases of bricked devices. Think twice...Although the freedom achieved is highly alluring, it grew to a dangerous procedure to undertake: they much prefer to keep a blçoatware-chained frustrated user to a jaibreaker free ryder REAL OWNER of the advertisements machines that heavily subsided manufacturers produce and sell to gullible buyers who will not be granted license to uninstall the fat and large Facebook files that occupy substantial RAM chunks off any modern original device, hèlas.

I have always rooted all of my phones but after the note 5, I haven't really have the need to, especially since I use Samsung Pay a lot. And I mean. A. Lot.

Plus Samsung UI is less ugly and bloated. Plus I bought the Samsung one, not carrier branded so less need to root it and kick of carrier bloatware.

Yeah you should be fine and be able to root that S4 no problem, See I've got an S8 and I can't root mine, I've tried 100 times, Some of them shipped w/ bootloaders that exploits were found in (Bootloader V1, V2, V3) - and of course mine has a locked Bootloader V4 (thats my luck, LOL :( ) but yeah you should be able to root that S4 not a problem

It's not about how hard you fall, it's how well you pick back up.

Yes. But titanium backup can restore it.
